A heads-up about your mums & pets
Chrysanthemums (garden mums) are listed by the ASPCA as mildly toxic to dogs and cats. Most pets steer clear of them — the taste is bitter — but curious puppies and kittens sometimes take a bite.
If a pet does chew on them the most common signs are drooling, an upset stomach, vomiting, or mild diarrhea. Serious reactions are rare and usually only happen with a large amount.
Simple things that help:
Place the mums up on the top step, in an elevated planter, or behind a barrier pet can't easily reach.
If your pet takes a bite, rinse their mouth with water, offer a little food, and watch them for a few hours.
Any real concern — call your vet or the ASPCA Poison Control line at (888) 426-4435 (24/7, small consult fee).
